Simenti is a small settlement and safari base deep inside the Niokolo-Koba National Park in southeastern Senegal, on the banks of the Gambia River. The park is one of the largest and most important protected areas in West Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protecting a vast landscape of savanna, gallery forest, wetlands and rivers. From Simenti, visitors explore the park in search of its wildlife, which includes hippos and crocodiles in the river, antelopes such as the rare Derby eland, along with buffalo, monkeys, warthogs and a great variety of birds; lions and leopards are present but elusive. Simenti has a rest camp and a wildlife-viewing hide overlooking the river. It is reached by road into the park from towns such as Tambacounda, and access can be seasonal. The climate is hot, with a dry season, best for wildlife, and a wet season.
