Selebi-Phikwe is a town in eastern Botswana, in the southern African interior, which grew from the 1970s around a large copper and nickel mine that was for decades one of the country's biggest employers. With the closure of the mine in 2016, the town has been working to reinvent its economy, and it remains a regional centre with a spread-out, planned layout. For visitors it is not a classic safari destination in itself, but it lies within reach of the eastern Botswana bushveld and the Tuli Block along the Limpopo River, a scenic area of private game reserves, rugged rock formations and wildlife. Selebi-Phikwe has its own airport and is connected by road and rail across Botswana and toward the borders with South Africa and Zimbabwe. The climate is warm and dry, with a hot rainy season from around November to March.
