Sasstown is a coastal community in Grand Kru County, in the remote southeast of Liberia, on the stretch of Atlantic shoreline historically known as the Kru Coast. It is the home area of the Kru people, in particular the Jlao, long known as skilled seafarers and fishers along this coast, and the older settlement a little inland is called Old Sasstown or Filorkli. The town has a nineteenth-century history of trade and Methodist mission activity, including early schools and coffee growing. This is a rural, out-of-the-way part of Liberia rather than a developed tourist destination, with the county capital at Barclayville and the wider region defined by its coast, forests and Kru culture. Sasstown is reached by long roads along or inland from the coast, often difficult in the rains. The climate is tropical, with a heavy wet season for much of the year.
