San Giovanni Rotondo is a hill town on Italy's Gargano peninsula in Puglia, known chiefly as one of the country's most visited pilgrimage destinations thanks to its association with Padre Pio, the twentieth-century friar and mystic who lived and is entombed here. The town's Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie, alongside the newer Renzo Piano-designed pilgrimage church built to handle the volume of visitors, draws millions of pilgrims and tourists each year, making San Giovanni Rotondo one of the busiest single-destination pilgrimage sites in Europe.

There is no airport in the town itself, and travelers should not expect one; the practical gateways are Bari, roughly two hours south by road, and the smaller Foggia airport, somewhat closer but with far fewer scheduled connections. Most visitors arrive by rental car or organized coach from Bari, since the Gargano peninsula's public transport thins out considerably once you leave the coastal towns, and the drive up into the hills adds time beyond straight-line distance.

Beyond the sanctuary complex itself, San Giovanni Rotondo sits within easy reach of the wider Gargano peninsula, a rugged limestone promontory known for its coastal towns, the Foresta Umbra nature reserve, and the pilgrimage shrine town of Monte Sant'Angelo nearby, which shares the region's long tradition of religious tourism. The town itself is modest in scale outside the sanctuary district, built up substantially around hotels and pilgrim services rather than historic architecture.

The sanctuary complex operates largely year-round, but the town is busiest around Padre Pio's feast days in late September and during the main pilgrimage season from spring through early autumn, when both accommodation and roads into the Gargano fill up. Travelers planning a visit should book lodging well ahead during these periods and can expect a quieter, more contemplative experience in the winter months instead, when crowds thin considerably.
