Saas-Fee is a famous alpine village in the Valais, in the south of Switzerland, set high in a mountain valley at around 1,800 metres and surrounded by a ring of glaciers and snow peaks. It is known as the Pearl of the Alps, ringed by no fewer than thirteen mountains rising above 4,000 metres, the highest concentration in the Alps, including the Dom, the highest peak that lies entirely within Switzerland. Saas-Fee is a classic Swiss village of old wooden chalets, and has been car-free since 1951, so visitors leave their cars at the entrance. It is a great centre for skiing, including summer skiing on the high Fee glacier, and for walking in the mountains. Saas-Fee is reached by train to Visp and then by bus up the valley; the nearest major airport is Geneva. The climate is alpine, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters.
