Rum Cay is a small, sparsely populated out island in the southeastern Bahamas, lying between Long Island and San Salvador in the warm waters of the Atlantic. It is a quiet, undeveloped island of low hills, beaches and reefs, with a tiny community centred on the settlement of Port Nelson. For visitors, the appeal is seclusion and nature: uncrowded white-sand beaches, excellent diving and snorkelling on surrounding coral reefs and wrecks, and bonefishing in the shallows. The island has a long history, once supporting salt and pineapple production, and lies near San Salvador, associated with Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World. Rum Cay is reached by small aircraft to its airstrip or by boat, with connections through Nassau and nearby islands, so a visit needs planning. The climate is warm and subtropical, pleasant much of the year, with a hurricane season from June to November.
