RUD is the airport code for Shahroud Airport, serving Shahroud, a city in the north of Iran, in the Semnan province, set at the meeting of two great landscapes: the southern slopes of the Alborz mountains and the northern edge of the vast Dasht-e Kavir desert. This position made Shahroud an important stop on the old Silk Road, where caravans rested and stocked up before crossing the desert or the mountains, and it grew up beside the ancient neighbouring town of Bastam, with its historic mosque and shrine. Today Shahroud is a pleasant provincial city, a base for exploring the mountains, the desert and the famous cloud forest of Abr nearby. Shahroud is reached by air into its airport, and by road and rail on the main routes between Tehran and Mashhad. For any travel to Iran, check current government advice. The climate is dry, hot in summer and cold in winter, at the desert's edge.
