Qingdao is a major coastal city on the Yellow Sea in Shandong Province, in the east of China, known for its beaches, its beer and its distinctive European-influenced architecture. Once leased to Germany around the turn of the 20th century, Qingdao retains an old quarter of red-roofed, German-era buildings and churches, giving it a look unlike most Chinese cities, and it is the home of the famous Tsingtao brewery, founded in that era. The city is one of China's most popular seaside destinations, with beaches, a lively waterfront and the annual international beer festival, set against green hills and the sea. Its main airport is Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport, which replaced the old Liuting airport. Qingdao is reached by flights into Jiaodong, by high-speed rail, and by road and sea. The climate is temperate and maritime, with warm, humid summers and cold winters.
