Port-Gentil is the second-largest city of Gabon, in Central Africa, and the economic and oil capital of the country, set on Mandji Island at the mouth of the Ogooue river delta, on the Atlantic coast. It is the centre of Gabon's petroleum and timber industries, a busy port and industrial city, and one of the most important economic hubs in the country. Port-Gentil has a striking geography: for most of its history it has had no road link to the rest of Gabon at all, cut off by the delta and the sea, so that it can be reached only by air or by boat, giving it the feel of an island city. Nearby is Cape Lopez, the westernmost point of Gabon. Port-Gentil is reached by air into its airport and by sea, rather than by a direct road from the capital, Libreville. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with a long rainy season and a cooler dry spell in the middle of the year.
