PKX is the airport code for Beijing Daxing International Airport, a huge airport that opened in 2019 to the south of the Chinese capital, serving Beijing alongside the older Beijing Capital International Airport. Designed by the architect Zaha Hadid's practice, its vast, starfish-shaped terminal is one of the largest single airport buildings in the world and has become a landmark in its own right. Daxing was built to relieve congestion and add capacity for the Beijing region, one of the busiest air markets on earth, and it handles a large share of the city's domestic and international flights. For travelers it is above all a gateway to Beijing, with its historic sites such as the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. The airport is connected to central Beijing by a dedicated express rail line, metro and expressways. The climate is continental, with cold winters and hot summers.
