PIO is the airport code for Pisco, a coastal city in the Ica region of southern Peru, on the Pacific and best known as a gateway to some of the country's finest natural attractions. Just to the south lies Paracas, home to the Paracas National Reserve, a protected desert-and-ocean landscape, and the departure point for boat trips to the Ballestas Islands, teeming with sea lions, penguins and seabirds and often called a poor man's Galapagos. The area is also within reach of the famous Nazca Lines further south and is part of the region that gives its name to pisco, the Peruvian grape brandy. Pisco is reached by road down the Pan-American Highway from Lima, a few hours to the north, and has an airport that also serves as a base for flights over the Nazca Lines. The climate is dry and mild, typical of the Peruvian desert coast.
