Pemba is a coastal city in the far north of Mozambique and the capital of Cabo Delgado province, on a large natural bay of the Indian Ocean. Travelers should be aware, however, that Cabo Delgado has been affected since 2017 by a violent insurgency, and governments including the United States, United Kingdom and others advise strongly against travel to the province, with the US rating it Do Not Travel; Pemba itself is considered vulnerable. This page is informational only and does not encourage travel; consult official government advice. Historically, Pemba was known for its beaches and diving and as a gateway to the Quirimbas Archipelago. Because of the security situation, travelers seeking Mozambican beaches are usually directed to the stable southern coast, such as Tofo, Vilanculos and Bazaruto. Always check current advisories before making any decision.
