Palana is a small, remote town on the west coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East, serving as the administrative centre of the Koryak Okrug within Kamchatka Krai. It sits on the Palana River a few kilometres inland from the Sea of Okhotsk, in a wild, thinly populated landscape of tundra, rivers and coast, home to the Indigenous Koryak people, traditionally reindeer herders and coastal fishers. With only a few thousand residents, Palana is one of the more isolated settlements in a region already famous for its remoteness, volcanoes and untouched nature. This is not a conventional tourist destination but a frontier administrative town, of interest mainly for its Arctic-edge setting and Koryak culture. It is reached by small aircraft, as there are no through roads to the rest of Kamchatka. The climate is cold and subarctic, with long, harsh winters and short, cool summers.
