Oskemen, also widely known by its Russian name Ust-Kamenogorsk, is a city in far eastern Kazakhstan, set where the Ulba River meets the great Irtysh, and the capital of the East Kazakhstan region. It grew from an 18th-century Russian fort into a major industrial centre, known for metallurgy and metals processing, with a mix of Soviet-era and modern districts along the rivers. For travelers, its main appeal is as a gateway to the Kazakh Altai, the beautiful mountain region to the east, with forests, lakes and peaks around Katon-Karagay National Park and the Rakhman Springs, offering hiking, fishing and nature far off the usual tourist trail. Oskemen has an airport with domestic and some regional flights, and rail and road links across Kazakhstan. The climate is sharply continental, with warm summers and long, cold winters, so summer is the best time for the mountains.
