Odienne is a town in the far northwest of Cote d'Ivoire, in West Africa, the main centre of the Denguele region, near the borders with Guinea and Mali. It lies in a landscape of open northern savanna, giving way to greener, hillier country toward the west, in one of the most remote corners of the country. Odienne is an old town with a strong Malinke heritage, founded as the capital of a nineteenth-century kingdom by the warrior Vakaba Toure, and it remains the trading and administrative heart of a farming region known for its cashews, cotton, yams and mangoes. It is a lively market town rather than a tourist resort, a window on the culture of the far north. Odienne is reached by long roads across the savanna and by its airport. The climate is hot, with a rainy season in the middle of the year and a long, dry, dusty season.
