NYM is the airport code for Nadym, a town in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in the Russian Arctic, on the Nadym River in the far north of western Siberia. It is above all a natural-gas town: it grew from the late 1960s as a base for developing the huge Medvezhye gas field, and the wider region is one of the largest gas-producing areas in the world, supplying much of Russia's output. Nadym sits on flat terrain where the northern taiga forests give way to open tundra, in the traditional lands of the Indigenous Nenets people, reindeer herders of the Arctic. This is a remote industrial town rather than a tourist destination, with a harsh climate of long, extremely cold winters and short summers. It is reached by air to Nadym Airport and by the region's limited road and rail links.
