Nkau, sometimes written Nkaus, is a rural community in the Mohale's Hoek district, in the south of Lesotho, the small mountain kingdom set high in the mountains of southern Africa and entirely surrounded by South Africa. It is not a single town but a community of many small villages spread across the highlands, at an altitude of around two thousand metres above sea level, in a landscape of grassy mountains, deep valleys and big skies. This is classic Basotho country, where villages of stone and thatch dot the hillsides, herders wrapped in blankets tend cattle and sheep, and life follows the rhythm of the seasons. The district capital, Mohale's Hoek, lies to the west, toward the lowlands and the South African border. Nkau is reached by mountain road. The climate is cool highland, with warm, wet summers and cold, sometimes snowy, winters.
