NIA is an airport code linked to Nimba County in northeastern Liberia, centred on the mining town of Yekepa near the point where Liberia, Guinea and Cote d'Ivoire meet. Yekepa was built around the iron-ore mines of the Nimba mountains, first developed decades ago and worked today by a major international mining company, with the ore railed roughly 250 kilometres south to the port of Buchanan. The area is dominated by the Nimba Range, a chain of green mountains that includes some of the highest peaks in West Africa and a transboundary nature reserve rich in rare wildlife, though much of it is protected or tied to mining. This is a remote, industrial and frontier region rather than a developed tourist destination. It lies about 110 kilometres northeast of the capital, Monrovia, reached by long roads and local air links. The climate is tropical, with heavy rains for much of the year.
