Naberezhnye Chelny is a large city in the Republic of Tatarstan, in Russia, on the Kama river, east of the regional capital, Kazan. It is the second-largest city in Tatarstan, with over half a million people, and is above all an industrial city, famous as the home of KAMAZ, the giant truck manufacturer, whose vast plant is one of the largest vehicle factories in the world. The modern city grew rapidly from a small town in the 1970s to house the workers of this great enterprise. Set on the wide Kama river, it is a planned Soviet-era city of broad avenues and apartment blocks, in the Tatar heartland. Because travel to Russia is affected by the current situation, travellers should check their government's current advice. Naberezhnye Chelny is reached by flights, by rail and by road, and lies on the river. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters.
