Mussau is a remote tropical island in the far north of Papua New Guinea, the largest of the St Matthias group, in the New Ireland province, lying in the Bismarck Sea about a hundred and forty kilometres northwest of Kavieng. It is one of the most northerly parts of the country, only a degree or so from the equator, a green, hilly island covered in ancient rainforest and ringed by coral reefs, lagoons and mangroves.
