Mussau is a remote tropical island in the far north of Papua New Guinea, the largest of the St Matthias group, in the New Ireland province, lying in the Bismarck Sea about a hundred and forty kilometres northwest of Kavieng. It is one of the most northerly parts of the country, only a degree or so from the equator, a green, hilly island covered in ancient rainforest and ringed by coral reefs, lagoons and mangroves. Mussau is a noted haven for wildlife, with many plants and butterflies found nowhere else, and clear waters rich in marine life, a pristine and little-visited corner of the Pacific. It is a place of small villages and traditional island life. Mussau is reached by small aircraft into its airstrip and by boat from Kavieng, so any journey needs local arrangements. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with heavy rainfall for much of the year.
