Momeik is a town in the northern Shan State of Myanmar, in the hilly country of the country's northeast, on the Shweli river. It is the centre of a former Shan princely state, in a region of hills, valleys and rivers, and lies near the famous gem-mining country of upper Myanmar, in an area known for its rubies, jade and other precious stones. Momeik is a modest market and administrative town rather than a tourist destination, in a scenic but remote part of the Shan hills. However, conditions in parts of Myanmar, including Shan State, can be unsettled, so travelers should check their government's current advice carefully, as travel here may be restricted or unsafe. Momeik is reached by roads through the Shan hills and by a local airport, though access can be limited. The climate is warm, with a rainy monsoon season and a drier, cooler period.
