MMB is the airport code for Memanbetsu Airport, in the east of Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, in the town of Ozora, facing the Sea of Okhotsk. It is the main gateway to the wild and beautiful landscapes of eastern Hokkaido, one of the most unspoilt corners of the country. The airport lies close to the city of Abashiri, famous in winter for the drift ice that fills the Sea of Okhotsk, and is the nearest airport to the Shiretoko peninsula, a World Heritage wilderness of mountains, forests and bears. Nearby too are the great crater lakes of the region, such as Lake Mashu, Lake Kussharo and Lake Akan, in a country rich in hot springs, seafood and nature. Memanbetsu is reached by air from Tokyo, Osaka and other cities, and by bus and road to Abashiri and beyond. The climate is cold, with warm summers and long, snowy winters.
