Misima is a mountainous, volcanic island in the northwest of the Louisiade Archipelago, in the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea, in the Coral Sea far to the east of the mainland. It is a long, rugged island of forested mountains, villages and reef, in a scattered chain of islands off the eastern tip of New Guinea, off the usual tourist track. Misima is best known for its history of gold mining: gold was discovered here in the late 19th century, and a large gold mine operated on the island until the early 2000s, since when small-scale mining has continued. Beyond this, the island offers dramatic scenery, traditional island culture and the waters of the Louisiades. Misima is reached by small aircraft to its airstrip and by boat among the islands of Milne Bay, with connections through Alotau, the provincial capital. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with heavy rainfall.
