The park itself sits within Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, close enough to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and the rock fortress of Sigiriya that most visitors combine a Minneriya safari with a day or two exploring those genuinely significant archaeological sites, along with the cave temples at Dambulla nearby. There is no major airport at Minneriya itself, so travelers typically fly into Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo and continue by road, a drive of roughly three to four hours depending on traffic through the island's interior, or connect via one of Sri Lanka's smaller domestic airstrips serving the Cultural Triangle when scheduled service is running. Within the area, safari jeeps with local guides are the standard way to enter the national park, since independent vehicle access is not how the park operates, and most visitors base themselves in nearby towns like Habarana or Sigiriya rather than in Minneriya itself.
