MGZ is the airport code for Myeik Airport, serving Myeik, formerly known as Mergui, a historic port city on the Andaman Sea coast of far southern Myanmar, in the Tanintharyi region. Myeik is best known as the gateway to the Mergui Archipelago, a vast and remote scattering of around eight hundred tropical islands, among the least developed and most pristine in Southeast Asia. The archipelago is famous for its untouched beaches, coral reefs and diving, and as the home of the Moken, the sea-going people often called sea gypsies, who live among the islands. Myeik itself is an old trading town of markets and pagodas. Myeik is reached by flights into its airport and by road and sea. Note that travel in Myanmar can be affected by the wider situation in the country, so it is wise to check current advice. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with a long, wet monsoon season.
