Mekambo is a small town in the northeast of Gabon, in Central Africa, in the province of Ogooue-Ivindo, set on the banks of the Zadie river deep in the rainforests of the Congo basin. It is a remote trading town, the centre of a district known for its mineral wealth, in a region of dense forest, rivers and hills near the border with the Republic of the Congo. The wider Ogooue-Ivindo province is one of the great wilderness areas of Gabon, a country famous for its forests and national parks and for wildlife such as forest elephants and gorillas. Mekambo itself is a modest local centre rather than a tourist destination, a window on a little-visited corner of equatorial Africa. Mekambo is reached by long forest roads and by a small airport. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with heavy rainfall and no real dry season.
