MBX is the airport code for Maribor Airport, serving Maribor, the second-largest city in Slovenia, in the northeast of the country, set on the Drava river at the foot of the Pohorje hills. Maribor lies at the heart of a famous wine-growing region, and is home to the Old Vine, or Stara Trta, recognised as the oldest living grapevine in the world, still producing grapes after more than four centuries in the old riverside quarter. The city has a charming old centre, and the wooded slopes of Pohorje just above it are a popular area for skiing in winter and walking in summer. Maribor is a relaxed university city, a good base for the vineyards and hills of Slovenian Styria. Maribor is reached by air through its small airport, and easily by road and rail from the capital, Ljubljana, and from Austria. The climate is temperate continental, with warm summers and cold, sometimes snowy winters.
