MBR is the code for Mbout Airport, a small, little-used airfield serving the town of Mbout in the Gorgol region of southern Mauritania, in West Africa. Mbout is a modest town in the Sahel, the semi-arid belt of grassland and scrub that stretches along the southern edge of the Sahara, in the valley country not far north of the Senegal river, which forms Mauritania's southern border. This is a landscape of wide, dry plains, seasonal watercourses and scattered villages, greener in the short rainy season and dusty for much of the year. The regional capital, Kaedi, lies to the southwest on the Senegal river. Mbout's airport sees little traffic; the nearest airfield with wider service is at Selibaby, to the southeast. Travel in the region is mainly by road across the Sahel. The climate is hot and dry, with a brief rainy season around the middle of the year.
