Mayajigua is a small town in central Cuba, in the north of Sancti Spiritus Province, in a rural area of countryside, sugar country and low hills near the northern coast. It is a modest agricultural town rather than a major destination, but it lies in an interesting region: nearby are natural attractions such as the Lago Hanabanilla and, on the coast, the resort keys of the Jardines del Rey, including Cayo Santa Maria, reached by causeway, with their white-sand beaches. The wider region of central Cuba is known for its colonial towns, above all the beautifully preserved Trinidad and Sancti Spiritus, its sugar heritage and its countryside. Mayajigua is reached by road through the province from Sancti Spiritus and other towns. The climate is warm and tropical, with a wetter summer and a drier, milder winter, and a hurricane risk in the season.
