Matam is a town in the northeast of Senegal, in West Africa, the capital of the Matam region, set on the banks of the Senegal river along the border with Mauritania. It lies in the historic region of Fouta Toro, the fertile valley of the middle Senegal river, long the heartland of the Haalpulaar, or Fulani, people, whose culture, language and history shape the region. Around the river valley the land is green and cultivated, but away from the water it soon gives way to the dry, open country of the Sahel. Matam is a quiet regional and farming centre rather than a tourist destination, a window on the life of the Senegal river country. Matam is reached by long roads across the north of Senegal, and by the airport at nearby Ouro Sogui. The climate is hot and dry, with a short rainy season in the summer and very high temperatures for much of the year.
