The honest picture here is one of genuine remoteness: the Anambas Islands sit well off Indonesia's main tourist circuits, and Matak specifically has limited accommodation and infrastructure, so any real visit depends far more on careful advance planning than on simply showing up and finding options on arrival. What draws the small handful of travelers who do make the trip is genuinely real: clear water over healthy coral reefs, quiet beaches without crowds, and an island landscape that has stayed undeveloped largely because reaching it takes real effort rather than by any deliberate design. Matak does have its own small airstrip, historically tied to offshore oil and gas operations in the surrounding waters, and this occasionally supports limited charter or scheduled service, though flight availability should be verified directly rather than assumed given how thin and variable it can be. Ferry connections from Tanjung Pinang or other Riau Islands hubs offer an alternative but slower route into the Anambas group, with schedules that change and should be checked close to the date of travel. Once on Matak or elsewhere in the Anambas group, local boats are the practical way to move between islands, since there is no bridge network connecting them. Seasonally, the drier months from roughly March through September tend to bring calmer seas and better underwater visibility, while the monsoon season from around November through February can bring rougher water and more disrupted boat and flight schedules, so travelers should build in flexibility and confirm conditions before committing to a specific itinerary.
