Mandritsara is a town in the north of Madagascar, in the Sofia region of the island's northern highlands, inland from the northwest coast. It is a remote district centre in a hilly, rural landscape of the Malagasy interior, a farming and market town for the surrounding countryside rather than a tourist destination. The region is known for rice and other agriculture, and for its distance from the main tourist routes, in a part of Madagascar of red-earth hills, villages and dry forest. Mandritsara is a place of interest mainly as a regional hub and for its remote setting rather than for developed attractions. It is reached by long, often rough roads across the north of Madagascar, and by a small airstrip. The climate is warm, with a hot, wet season and a cooler, drier season, typical of the northern highlands.
