Travel guide: Maafaru, Maldives

Maafaru is a local island in Noonu Atoll, in the northern Maldives, and it is unusual among Maldivian islands for having its own international airport built directly on the island rather than requiring a seaplane or long boat transfer from Male. Maafaru International Airport opened in the late 2010s specifically to open up Noonu Atoll, which had previously been much harder to reach than the more established resort atolls closer to the capital. Noonu Atoll itself sits toward the northern end of the Maldives' long chain of coral atolls, less developed for tourism than the atolls closer to Male but growing steadily as more travelers discover it.

It is worth being honest about what kind of place Maafaru actually is: it is an inhabited local island, not a resort, so travelers expecting an overwater bungalow directly on Maafaru itself will be disappointed. Instead, the airport functions as a gateway to the wider Noonu Atoll, where a mix of private resort islands and other local, guesthouse-style islands are reached by a further boat or speedboat transfer after landing. Local islands like Maafaru follow the more modest, community-based model found across much of the Maldives outside its dedicated resorts: guesthouses rather than luxury villas, and a genuinely lived-in island rhythm rather than an all-inclusive bubble.

Getting around Maafaru itself is straightforward on foot or by bicycle, since local islands in the Maldives are typically small and low-lying, but onward travel to resorts or other islands in Noonu Atoll depends on pre-arranged boat or speedboat transfers, which should be booked through wherever a traveler is staying rather than assumed to be available on arrival. The Maldives has a tropical climate with a drier season roughly from December to April and a wetter, windier season through the middle of the year, and while diving and water activities are possible across both, the drier months generally bring calmer seas for transfers between islands.
