Lumi is a small town in the remote northwest of Papua New Guinea, in the Sandaun, or West Sepik, province, set in the rugged, forested Torricelli Mountains not far from the border with the Indonesian side of New Guinea. It lies in a green, mountainous region of rainforest, ridges and small rivers, home to communities with their own languages and traditions, in one of the more isolated corners of the country. Lumi is a modest local and mission centre rather than a tourist destination, of interest for its remote highland setting and the surrounding Torricelli range, an area of rainforest and rare wildlife, including endangered tree kangaroos protected by local conservation. Lumi is reached by small aircraft to its airstrip and by rough mountain roads, so any journey here needs local arrangements. The climate is warm and very wet, with heavy rainfall typical of the New Guinea mountains.
