Lumbo is a small coastal town in the north of Mozambique, in the Nampula province, on the Indian Ocean, best known as the mainland gateway to the historic Island of Mozambique, the Ilha de Mocambique. Lumbo lies on the coast opposite the island, to which it is joined by a long, single-lane bridge built in the 1960s, and it has the airport that serves the island. The Island of Mozambique, just offshore, is one of the great treasures of the country: a small coral island that was the capital of Portuguese East Africa for centuries, with an old stone town of faded colonial buildings, churches, a great fort, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lumbo itself is a quiet mainland town, the doorway to this remarkable place. Lumbo is reached by road from Nampula city and by its airport, with the island a short drive and bridge away. The climate is warm and tropical, with a wet and a dry season.
