Lodja is a remote town in Sankuru Province, in the central Democratic Republic of the Congo, deep in the rainforest heart of the country. It serves as a regional hub for its surrounding district, with a busy central market trading produce, smoked fish and textiles, and an economy tied to rice growing and, in the wider country, diamond mining. As with much of the DRC, travel here requires care: conditions vary and parts of the country carry travel advisories, so it is important to check your government's current guidance and entry requirements before planning a trip. Lodja is reached by air through its local airport a few kilometres from town, as overland routes across the central Congo basin are long and difficult. Transport in town is basic, mostly bush taxis and walking. The climate is hot and humid, with heavy tropical rains for much of the year.
