LNV is the airport code for the airport on Lihir Island, the largest of the Lihir group of islands, in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea, in the Bismarck Sea to the northeast of the mainland. Lihir is a volcanic island, formed of overlapping volcanoes around a great crater that is still geothermally active, with hot springs and steaming ground, ringed by reef and tropical coast. The island is famous above all for the Lihir gold mine, one of the largest gold-producing operations in the world, set in the old volcanic crater, which even uses the island's underground steam to help generate power. Around the mine and the main settlement of Londolovit, Lihir remains an island of villages, gardens and strong custom. Lihir is reached by flights into its airport and by sea, with connections through Kavieng and other centres. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with heavy rainfall.
