Lakeba is the chiefly heart of the Lau group and the seat of its provincial capital: it is the home island of the high chiefs who hold the title of Tui Nayau, the paramount chief of Lau, based in the village of Tubou in the south of the island. It is a fertile, hilly island of about sixty square kilometres, ringed by reef and by a coast road, one of the larger islands of a scattered and little-visited chain.
