Libreville is the capital and largest city of Gabon, on the Atlantic coast of Central Africa, set on the estuary of the Komo river where it meets the ocean. Its name means free town, a reminder that the city was founded in part as a settlement for freed slaves in the nineteenth century. Today it is a lively, modern seaside capital, with palm-lined boulevards, markets and beaches along the ocean, and the main gateway to a country famous for its rainforests and wildlife. From Libreville, travellers can reach the coastal national parks of Akanda and Pongara, with their mangroves, beaches and nesting turtles, just across the estuary. Libreville is reached by air through Leon-Mba International Airport, a little to the northwest of the centre, and by coastal roads. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with a long rainy season and a cooler, drier spell in the middle of the year.
