Larnaca is a lively port and resort city on the southeast coast of Cyprus, in the eastern Mediterranean, and one of the main gateways to the island. Larnaca International Airport, just outside the city, is the largest airport in Cyprus and the arrival point for many visitors to the island. The heart of the city is the Finikoudes, a palm-lined seafront promenade running along a sandy town beach, backed by cafes, restaurants and a marina. Larnaca is an old city, built on the site of ancient Kition, and its landmarks include the historic Church of Saint Lazarus in the centre and, on the edge of town, the Larnaca Salt Lake, where flamingos gather in winter, beside the peaceful Hala Sultan Tekke mosque. Larnaca is reached by air into its airport and by road along the coast. The climate is warm Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters.
