Lamassa is a small village on the remote southwest coast of New Ireland, one of the island provinces of Papua New Guinea, with the small Lamassa Island lying just offshore in a bay of the same name. This is a very rural, out-of-the-way part of the country, where communities live largely by fishing, gardening and traditional island ways, amid the reefs and rainforest of the Bismarck Archipelago. There are no tourist facilities in the village itself. Travelers to this region generally base themselves in Kavieng, New Ireland's main town in the north, which has an airport with flights from Port Moresby, and travel down the long island by road or boat. Any visit to the far south needs local arrangements, guides and flexibility. The climate is hot, humid and tropical, with reef and marine life a highlight of the wider area.
