Laghouat is an oasis city in north-central Algeria, set where the southern edge of the Saharan Atlas mountains meets the northern fringe of the Sahara, about 400 kilometres south of Algiers. Long known as a gateway to the desert, it grew around a palm oasis watered by the Wadi Mzi, with date palms, orchards and gardens supporting the town for centuries. Its older quarter, built on hills, keeps a Saharan character of earth-toned buildings, and the city has a layered history of Berber, Arab, Ottoman and French rule. Laghouat is a natural stop on the route south toward the M'zab valley and Ghardaia. As with any travel in the Algerian Sahara, it is wise to check your government's current advice and any permit or guide requirements before heading further into the desert. The climate is hot and dry, with cold desert nights in winter.
