Kyaukpyu is a coastal town in Rakhine State, on the western coast of Myanmar, on an island by the Bay of Bengal. It has a deep natural harbour and has become strategically important as the site of a major port and the terminus of oil and gas pipelines running across Myanmar to China, part of large infrastructure projects in the area. The surrounding region is one of coast, islands, fishing communities and the wider landscapes of Rakhine. However, Rakhine State has been affected by serious conflict and humanitarian crises in recent years, and much of the area may be unsafe or off-limits to travelers; it is essential to check your government's current advice, which is likely to warn strongly against travel. Kyaukpyu is reached by a local airport and by road and sea, though access is often restricted. The climate is hot and tropical, with a heavy monsoon.
