Kwajalein Atoll is a vast coral atoll in the Marshall Islands, in the central Pacific, famous for having the largest lagoon of any atoll in the world. It is a great ring of low, palm-covered islets enclosing an enormous lagoon. Kwajalein is not an ordinary holiday destination: its main island is a United States Army installation, the home of the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site, and access to it is strictly controlled, requiring official permission or sponsorship. The island generally open to visitors is Ebeye, a crowded Marshallese island-city where most of the atoll's local population lives. The atoll has extraordinary lagoon waters and reefs, and a history of fierce Second World War battles. Kwajalein is reached by air on flights within the Marshall Islands, though entry to the base itself is restricted. The climate is tropical, warm year-round, and very low-lying.
