Kuyol is a small, remote settlement in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, in the vast lowland country of the Fly river, in the far southwest of the country near the border with the Indonesian province of Papua. It lies in an isolated region of rivers, rainforest, swamp and floodplain, one of the least developed and least accessible parts of Papua New Guinea, in an area of scattered villages far from any large town. Kuyol is a modest local community rather than a tourist destination, dependent on its airstrip and on river and forest travel, in a green, watery landscape rich in tradition and wildlife. Kuyol is reached by small aircraft to its airstrip and by boat along the rivers, so any journey here needs local arrangements and up-to-date advice. The climate is hot, humid and very wet, with heavy rainfall through much of the year.
