Kufra, or Al Kufrah, is a group of oases deep in the Sahara desert of southeastern Libya, one of the most isolated inhabited places in the country, far from the Mediterranean coast. It is a classic desert oasis settlement, where date palms, farms and a few towns cluster around water in an immense sea of sand and gravel, historically an important stop on the trans-Saharan caravan routes and a remote frontier region. Kufra remains a strategic desert crossroads near the borders with Egypt, Sudan and Chad. Libya has experienced instability and conflict in recent years, so travelers should check their government's current advice, which is likely to warn against travel. Kufra is reached by long desert roads and by a local airport across vast distances of Sahara. The climate is extremely hot and dry, one of the most arid places on earth.
