KRM is the airport code for the airstrip at Karanambo, in the North Rupununi, a vast savanna region in the interior of Guyana, in South America, near the Rupununi River. This is a remote and beautiful landscape of open grassland, wetlands, ponds and gallery forest, teeming with wildlife, far from the coast where most of Guyana's people live. Karanambo is best known for its historic ranch, established in the early 20th century, which became a pioneering centre for the conservation of the giant river otter and other Rupununi wildlife, and a birthplace of ecotourism in the region. The surrounding wetlands are famous for giant otters, black caiman, giant anteaters and spectacular birdlife. Karanambo is reached by small aircraft to its airstrip and by river and rough tracks across the savanna. The climate is tropical, with a marked wet and dry season.
