Kostanay is a city in northern Kazakhstan, the administrative centre of Kostanay Region, set on the Tobol River in the trans-Ural steppe near the border with Russia. It is a spread-out, Soviet-planned city on the flat Turgai plateau, serving as a regional hub for the surrounding grain-growing and mining country rather than a major tourist destination. Its everyday attractions include the Tobol River embankment for walks and cycling, Victory Park and Central Park, and the well-stocked Kostanay Regional Museum of Local History, which houses an unusual toy museum. A quirky monument to Charlie Chaplin stands in the city centre. The bigger draw lies outside town at the Naurzum State Nature Reserve, part of a UNESCO-listed steppe landscape famous for relict pine forest, migrating birds and the rare saiga antelope. Winters are long and very cold, while summers are warm.
