KLJ is a code associated with Klaipeda, the third-largest city of Lithuania and its only major seaport, on the Baltic Sea coast in the west of the country, at the mouth of the Curonian Lagoon. Klaipeda has a distinctive character, having been the German city of Memel for much of its history, and retains a charming old town of half-timbered German-style buildings and a lively harbour. Its greatest treasure lies just across the water: the Curonian Spit, a long, thin peninsula of huge sand dunes, pine forest and quiet fishing villages, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reached by ferry from the city. Klaipeda is a gateway to the Lithuanian coast and its beaches, including the resort of Palanga nearby. The city itself has an airport, and the region is also served by the larger airports of Lithuania. The climate is temperate, cool and often breezy on the Baltic coast.
