Kiwai Island is a long, low island in the delta of the Fly river, in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, where the great river meets the sea in the Gulf of Papua, near the border with Indonesia. It is a remote, flat island of the vast Fly delta, a landscape of river, mangroves, mudflats and coastal swamp, home to the Kiwai people, who live by fishing and gardening and are known for their canoe culture and traditions along this watery frontier. This is not a tourist destination and has minimal services, of interest for its remote riverine setting and cultures rather than any developed attractions. Kiwai Island is reached by boat along the Fly river and delta, and by light aircraft to airstrips in the region, so any journey here needs local arrangements. The climate is hot, humid and very wet, with heavy rainfall and the influence of the great river.
